Fagnano Lake: How to Get There and Tours
Fagnano Lake is the largest lake in Tierra del Fuego, with its western portion extending into Chile.
Traveling north from Ushuaia, you’ll first reach Escondido Lake before continuing on to Fagnano Lake.
The lake is named after Salesian priest José Fagnano, one of the first European settlers in the region. The Indigenous Selk’nam people originally called it Cami (or Khami), meaning "elongated" in their language.
Fagnano Lake stretches from east to west for 104 km (65 mi), with 13 km (8 mi) lying within Chilean territory. It drains into the Strait of Magellan via the Azopardo River. Some sections of the lake reach depths of over 200 meters (656 ft).
Visiting Fagnano Lake
On the western shore, you'll find the Hostería Kaikén, cozy cabins, the Khami Museum, and other tourism infrastructure. The area is just minutes away from the small town of Tolhuin.
Along the shoreline, scenic walking trails weave through native forests. Visitors will also find docks and picnic areas. Lake activities include boat rides, kayaking, and sport fishing.
Fagnano Lake Tours
Most travel agencies in Ushuaia offer this tour, especially during spring and summer. It’s usually sold as a combined full-day tour: Lake Escondido + Lake Fagnano.
